I am really glad that I stlmbued upon this website. I am a Senior Art and design Education major and have recently taught a high school class in Chelsea, New York. Before I even looked at this website I had developed a lesson using pennies. I was inspired by my little cousins math homework, I was confused by an odd symbol next to his money calculation, and I couldn't remember what that symbol was or meant, it was a cents sign. Have you noticed that the cents sign has practically become worthless and never used? Nevertheless, I was inspired. I came up with a concept for my high school students to intrigue them. A penny for you thoughts was my slogan. I told them that a penny for you thoughts wouldn't be insulting in the 16th century. The Straight Dope calculates a 16th-century penny would be worth $42.67 in 2001. It got them to brainstorm thoughts, ideas, and visuals. Then we hot glued hundreds of pennies to individual magnets. The students brought their brainstormed thoughts and visuals and we went to town. We walked around the city trying to find metal that the pennies would magnetize to. They spelled out their thoughts and visuals onto mail boxes, subway cars, and traffic light poles. We documented their efforts with photos. After the project we discussed disposable art, and graffiti. How we created our own type of graffiti that did not destroy public property. They took the magnets home and continued the project without my knowing it. By the end of the semester they showed me they documentation for the continued project. I would've really liked to show them how truly important a penny can be by showing them this website. I think what you are doing is wonderful! Keep up the good work! Let's bring back the cents sign one penny at a time!
